Do I have to seal my patio or driveway?

The answer is no, surprisingly, you don’t have to, BUT there are plenty of reasons why you should!

The answer is no, surprisingly, you don’t have to, BUT there are plenty of reasons why you should!

Consider this as an example -  Would you insure your car third party only or go fully comprehensive, including fire and theft? – OR Perhaps not bother to insure it at all! People spend thousands on their paving, it's well worth paying a bit more to keep your patio looking as it did when it was first installed.

The Risk!

It comes down to risk.  Do you want to risk your investment getting damaged and have to pay  out to get it repaired? Chances are someone will spill a drink one weekend or drop some sauce out of their burger, your car or lawn mower will leak some oil……..it’s going to happen!  ON YOUR PAVING………… Have a look at our Stain Tests Blog, we show examples on there

A few pounds spent now wisely sealing and protecting your paving could save you hundreds of pounds putting it right later. If you do nothing, you’ll see that stain every time you go outside!

What can you do?

Firstly it’s easy and quick to seal and protect paving, any competent DIYer can do it. Secondly look at the table below and choose the product you need. The questions you should ask yourself are:

1.    What type of paving do I have e.g Natural Stone, Slate, Limestone or Concrete etc?
2.    Do I want an invisible finish or to enhance the look of the paving?

Please note: Water Defence is for Brickwork, Masonry and Timber. Deck Magic (not featured in the chart) is used for Timber Decking.

Hi Sara. Most of our sealers are water based so will not trap in the efflorescence. For example our 'invisible' sealer SSP is perfect for all types of Natural Stone, it will allow the efflorescence to pass through it and wash away. Either Seal before jointing with EASYJoint or if it's already been jointed just wait 4 weeks before sealing it.

How long do you recommend before you seal the stone? We always suggest 3-6 months to ensure that any efflorescence will have shown before trapping it in. We would be interested in your thought?
