Azpects EASYJoint in wet conditions

It feels like our summers seem to be getting wetter and this is a disaster for the traditional mortar pointing methods. This is where EASYJoint comes in, here is our guide to EASYJoint in wet conditions.

Now I’m not sure about you but here at Azpects it feels like our summers seem to be getting wetter and this is a disaster for the traditional mortar pointing methods.

This is where EASYJoint comes in, EASYJoint is applied using water so a little bit (or a lot) of rain is no problem for EASYJoint and that’s why our particular type of compound sells by the trailer load throughout the UK, Europe and beyond.

Although Wet Conditions increase the setting time, EASYJoint will eventually set when dry.

Whilst EASYJoint doesn’t need water to set hard it does benefit the application process
1.    The water helps to make the EASYJoint more workable
2.    The water helps the EASYJoint to self-compact into the joints when brushing it in
3.    The water reduces the likelihood of staining to the paving. (See the full instructions on how to joint a patio)

EASYJoint will always set provided there is good drainage and water can get away, allowing air to get to all the joints.  This is why we recommend a permeable mortar base mix of 6:1 (6 parts sharp sand to 1 part cement) and a good fall on the patio.  Strong base mixes of say 3:1 & 4:1 are not recommended, will be impermeable and as such will cause poor drainage.  If you are laying a patio in an area with a high water table or generally poor drainage conditions (such as heavy clay soil) then EASYJoint is not recommended.

In warm summer temperatures the curing process is relatively fast, becoming fairly firm within 48 hours and fully load bearing within 72 hours of warm dry weather.  In wet and cold conditions these times will be significantly extended and the whole curing process can take up to 4 weeks for EASYJoint to reach full strength.

In heavy rain conditions some EASYJoint can be washed out – if this occurs simply top up with more.  Once application is complete we recommend ‘striking’ the joints, by running a jointing/ironing tool along each one, or by using a piece of plastic pipe, in order to create a slight concave finish, which compresses the surface and leaves an aesthetically pleasing finish.

You should then have a beautifully finished patio/driveway/path that will last for many years to come.
